Inverter & UPS Capacity Sizing Calculator
Calculate the exact Inverter / UPS capacity (VA rating) required for your home or office based on electrical running load, inductive power factor, and motor startup surge margin.
Electrical Load & Operational Inputs
Watts / VA SizingStandard inductive residential load factor (0.80). Purely resistive heating/filament loads equal 1.0.
Accommodates instantaneous inrush currents when compressor motors, refrigerators, or ceiling fans kick on.

Inverter sizing is governed by apparent power principles (VA = Watts / Power Factor). Leading manufacturers (Luminous, Livguard, Schneider, Victron) mandate a 20% to 25% safety overhead to handle inductive reactive power and startup inrush peaks.
| Inverter Rating (VA) | Max Continuous Load (W) | Battery Voltage (DC) | Typical Home Appliances Supported |
|---|---|---|---|
| 900 VA | 720 W | 12V (1 Batt) | 3 Fans, 5 LED Bulbs, 1 TV, Wi-Fi Router, Laptop |
| 1100 VA | 880 W | 12V (1 Batt) | 4 Fans, 8 LED Bulbs, 1 Smart TV, Gaming PC, Inverter Refrigerator |
| 1400 – 1700 VA | 1,120 – 1,360 W | 24V (2 Batts) | Full 2-3 BHK load: Fridge, 5 Fans, 10 LEDs, Microwave or Mixer briefly |
| 2000 – 2500 VA | 1,600 – 2,000 W | 24V (2 Batts) | Water Pump (0.5 HP) or 1 Ton Inverter AC + essential lighting & fans |
| 3500 VA – 5 kVA | 2,800 – 4,000 W | 48V (4 Batts) | Whole Villa / Office: 1.5 Ton AC, 1 HP Submersible Pump, Fridge & all rooms |
Frequently Asked Questions about Inverter Sizing
What is the difference between Watts (W) and Volt-Amperes (VA)?
Watts (W) measures real power consumed to do work, while Volt-Amperes (VA) measures apparent power supplied by an AC power source. In AC circuits with inductive loads (motors, transformers, compressor fridges), current and voltage are out of phase. Sizing an inverter requires dividing Watts by the Power Factor (typically 0.8) to get the true VA rating.
Why should I add a 25% surge safety margin?
Motor-driven appliances like ceiling fans, refrigerator compressors, and pumps draw 2x to 3x their rated running wattage for a few seconds during startup. A 25% buffer ensures the inverter will not trip into overload or reset when appliances start up simultaneously.
When should I choose a 24V or 48V inverter instead of 12V?
For loads under 1,000VA - 1,200VA, a 12V single battery inverter is standard. Above 1,400VA to 3,000VA, 24V (two 12V batteries in series) is required to reduce current draw (Amperes) by half, minimizing wire heating, voltage drop, and electrical stress. Above 3,500VA, 48V systems are standard.
Can I connect my inverter to solar panels later?
Yes, if you select a Hybrid Solar Inverter or add an external MPPT Solar Charge Controller. Make sure your inverter battery bank voltage matches your planned solar charge controller voltage.
